Thanksgiving in Michigan

Chris and I recently made the nine-hour drive out to visit my family in Michigan. We hung out for a week and had a delicious Thanksgiving meal with them. We also did a few other fun things with them, like visiting Sandhill Crane Winery.
And decorating mini Christmas trees with Hadley. I found a bunch of my old jewelry and my mom and Andrea donated some of theirs so we could decorate them. It was a fun little activity and a pretty good ice breaker with Hadley. She's always pretty shy when she first sees us.
But shortly after that, Chris put on a puppet show for her and we got in a tissue fight, so she was loving us.
Adam and Andrea also took us to lunch at Koto and to see Hunger Games for Chris's birthday. Those hibachi chefs sure love to squirt ya with saki.

The main event, of course, was Thanksgiving. We had a delicious feast with So. Much. Food.
Hadley and Reese had their own little kids table.
Grey was the official color of this gathering.
Sue with baby Izzie.
Check out the world's tallest wine bottle on the table there.
After the meal, everyone curled up and checked out the ads.
Asher bounced back pretty quickly though and showed us his handsome smile.

And of course, there was a little roughhousing with my dad, Hadley and Bruiser.
On our last night, Adam and Andrea had some people over and we played games and drank. Nana offered to take Miss Hadley for the night. She was delighted.

Here's Asher sporting a little sweater we bought him a few months ago.
We also got to see Nick and Emily's new kitten, Lovey. She was darling.
One other fun adventure was going over to Marshall to do a little shopping and eating at the Dark Horse Brewery. The brewery's ceiling was totally covered in ceramic mugs which people can purchase like a membership.
Hadley and Asher were so good at the brewery. And we all enjoyed the delicious pizza.
Chris and I also hung out with my friends Katie, Cara and Carl, but I guess I forgot to take pictures of that. Oops!

Anyway, it was a good trip. Thanks to everyone for having us and trying to keep us entertained!

Half Bath, Half Done

Last summer, when we had the terrible Dr. Eddy come replace a couple windows in our house, our half bathroom at the top of the stairs was left looking like this.

The bright yellow paint was the choice of the previous owners and never looked all that great. But after the dirtiest handyman in the world got through with them, the walls were downright disgusting. Even after I scrubbed everything down, it was still pretty bad.

I decided it was finally time to repaint the last room in the house. (That's right, I've painted every other wall and ceiling in the Capers!) I thought since there wasn't a lot of walls to deal with and there was already a lot of white in the room, I could get away with a deep blue color on the walls and ceiling. Boy was I wrong.

I tried out a couple samples of colors I liked but it just wasn't working in that tiny space. Turns out it's true what they say about dark colors making a room feel smaller.

With my plan out the window, I gathered more paint chips and thought long and hard about what color would make that room pop.

And then I thought a little longer. A little longer. Longer. And then it was January, almost half a year later and we still had to look at this multi-colored eyesore every day. Eek!

I can't say this is the only time I've ever procrastinated ... I've been meaning to put up a post on this blog for the last week and a half ... soooooooo ...

But besides color choice and what to put on my "statement wall" (the one you see as you're walking up the stairs) I had another snag in the bathroom makeover. See that piece of wood in the picture above? Up until just recently, there's been a 2x4 on two of the bathroom's walls. Serving no purpose, just nailed into the wall. And I have to admit, I was a little nervous about removing them. I was worried about what kind of mess I'd make pulling them down, and I even had a ridiculous fear that there would be a gaping hole across both walls that the boards were hiding. Like, that I'd be able to see outside. Stupid, I know.

Yet for months I waited, hoping I would wake up one day and magically find that the boards were gone and I had plain normal walls to work with for once. No wallpaper, no paneling, no ceiling tiles, no plaster. Just plain drywall.

When that obviously didn't happen (yay for this crazy old house!) I finally sucked it up and grabbed a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and got to work.

It took some time slowly rocking the board away from the wall. I started with the screwdriver and just tapped it in a bit, then pulled it back out and moved down the board. (Don't rock the screwdriver! You'll leave indents in the wall.) I did this until there was a gap all the way across. Then I used the claws on my hammer to pull the board some more, alternating between the top and bottom sides of the board. But eventually, that baby came off!

I was on a DIY high and feeling pretty handy after that first board came down, so I picked up the pace a little and got started on the longer board.

And then I got a little overzealous.

That mark, my friends, is what happens when you use the hammer as a lever, instead of just pulling straight toward you. Oops!

After some blushing and looking over my shoulder to make sure Chris and the kitties hadn't noticed that, I pressed on, determined to get rid of that second board. The window frame made things difficult on one end, as you can see below.

But with only a few other incidents, I succeeded and I was left with a horrible looking wall. But at least it was finally just a wall. Drywall and nothing more! Hurrah!

I sanded down the excess paint buildup around where the boards used to be and spackled over anything that looked not quite level ... including the hammer-sized hole I left in the wall.

So for a day or two I kept the room closed off while the dust settled, waiting for a day off from work to start painting. Well, as luck would have it, I actually got busy at work again and didn't have any time off for a week. I eventually did sneak in the half bath after work to wipe everything down and clean up the mess from sanding and spackling, so at least we could use the bathroom again. But now our little room was looking worse than ever.

At this point, I was too ashamed to post my progress, so I had to hold off on blogging until I could offer up a slightly happier sight than our funhouse bathroom pictures.

When I got today off from work, I knew what I had to do. I pulled up "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" on my cell phone, put some painting clothes on and went in for the kill. I still hadn't decided on a color or what would make the far wall a "statement wall." All I knew was that I couldn't look at that mess any more.

Enter Valspar's Brilliant White.

It's clean. It's calm. It's white.

This is the first time I've ever painted a room white. It felt a little strange at first. Sort of like the opposite of progress. Usually I try hard to banish the white walls.

But it's obviously way better than crazytown color wall. And actually ... I kind of like it.

There's something very soothing about being surrounded by white. Even with the room still in disarray, I felt calm standing there with the white paint on the walls.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm looking forward to seeing how this room comes together. I may end up stenciling a design on the statement wall. Or maybe hanging a large framed poster. Maybe sticking a bunch of postcards to the wall? Probably not that since it is a bathroom and I guess I want to be able to wipe things down. But something good is going to go there. Just not sure what yet.

In the meantime, there are a few things I know need fixing. The lighting/electrical outlet situation, for one. Both the lighting and the electrical outlet are pictured below.

That's bonkers, right? Only one outlet and it's on a crazy base of some weird utility light. And the bathroom only has this little candelabra bulb. Yeah, gonna need to fix that.

Also, I love that this room has glass doorknobs like the rest of the house, but someone before me got a little paint happy and painted parts of the door knob and screws. But I've already got something in mind for that ...

I also need to install a ring for a hand towel so we don't have to drape it over the mirror any more. And clean up this mess outside the bathroom.

And I may have to deal with this mess too.

If you don't pet this cat every day, you may not see the mess right away. Let's zoom in, shall we?

If you still don't see it, I'll give you a hint. Zoro has a black tail and a black butt. Yeah, my kitty got a little curious. And as I was writing this, Shadow ran by me and I saw that he too has a new white spot on his behind. Anyone have any tips for getting paint out of cat fur?

Our Christmases in New York

Chris and I celebrated Christmas a grand total of four times this year. Yup. Four. We kicked off the merriment over at Chris's dad's house, where we exchanged gifts with some of the family since we wouldn't be around for their usual Christmas Eve fete. I was naughty and forgot to take pictures that weekend, but we were really happy we got to squeeze in that celebration with Chris's family.

Our next Christmas celebration took place at our house, where Chris and I gave each other gifts (and a few for the kitties). We ended up exchanging gifts on December 18th, which I know sounds weird, but it was the last night we were going to be home before Christmas (besides the 19th, when we would be busy packing for our trip to Michigan).

I was totally psyched to receive this paint chip deck from Benjamin Moore. We don't have a BM store around here, so I can't go and pick up their paint chips for free. So this has hundreds of gorgeous colors that I can get color-matched at Lowes or Home Depot, which are all over here.

Having no one but the kitties around, we had to try to commemorate our celebration by taking a slightly-off center and unflattering self portrait, as seen below. haha

And then of course, I had to grab Meowface for a picture together. He never seems happy in pictures with me. Hmm, perhaps he doesn't like getting scooped up and held up like a human?

The kitties received a new catnip toy from Santa Claws (hee hee) that the all enjoyed, especially Zoro.

The kitties also loved romping around in the discarded wrapping paper ... again, especially Zoro. He kept diving into the middle of the pile and popping out at different spots.

We also gave the kitties a little tent to play in, which everyone was curious and excited about ... once again, especially Zoro. But even Shadow came out of hiding to give the tent a good sniff.

Some of my other favorite presents from Chris (besides the hilarious and adorable kitty calendar he makes me every year) were the artwork he bought from Etsy.com. There are a lot of sellers out there that make unique and interesting prints, like the ones below. I'll post a followup with some pictures once I get everything in frames and on the walls. :-)

Stay tuned for pictures from Christmas celebrations three and four!

It's Christmas Time

Last week, Chris was sick with a flu-like virus. He was pretty much down for the count for 6 or 7 days. Last Saturday, we didn't think he was up for our usual Christmas tradition of going to Beckwith's Family Christmas tree farm to cut down our own tree, so we headed over to Chuck Hafner's instead to pick up a pre-cut one. Once we got it home, poor Chris had to rest every so often while we decorated the tree because he was so weak from the virus. Poor baby!

But we managed to get it together and now we have this beautiful scene in our living room.

You can see in the picture above that we used some tin can lights I made to decorate the tree, as well as some pretty colored patio lights, which you can see better in the picture below. These were a bridal shower gift from my maid of honor last year. They look so good that I might have to try to find a few more strands for next year.

This past weekend, Chris was feeling much better (thankfully!) and even went out Christmas shopping. He returned with a giant present that he wrapped before I got a chance to peak at it. The only problem ... the kitties thought it was a present for them. You can see Zoro in the picture below sitting on it.

Well, the next morning, Chris came down into the living room ahead of me and all I heard was "Ah! The kitties unwrapped your present! Don't come in here!" followed by the sound of paper rustling and scotch tape being generously unwound and applied. haha Then we decided it was best to move that present to the front porch where the kitties couldn't get to it before I got to unwrap it for Christmas.

With that crisis averted, Chris and I focused our attention on decorating the outside of the house. We used to always hang icicle lights from the eaves with little hooks that were screwed right into the wood. But if you recall, we recently had ventilated soffits installed over the original wood, so that meant no more hooks.

Instead, we picked up some little S-hooks to dangle over the aluminum flashing around the front windows, and hung the lights from them. Then I lined the bushes with blinking colored lights and we put our fake white tree on the porch. Chris set everything up with timers, so all the lights come on at the same time every evening and shut off at night.

We also wrapped our lamp post in green lights and added this cute little Santa to our mailbox for something new this year. The pole that was included with the metal sign (from Target) was pretty flimsy, so I used some leftover ribbon from all the gift wrapping to secure the sign to the mailbox for added stability.

Lucky for us, we have a Watch Cat to keep an eye on the house whenever we're out around the holidays. haha

Another fun Christmas activity for us this weekend was decorating gingerbread cookies. Chris and I decided to go the easy (and delicious) route this year with store-bought cookies. So then we just added icing to create these adorable little guys.

Chris decided to go the Leonardo da Vinci route and decorate some cookies using both hands at the same time. Such a Renaissance man, my husband.

The results, however, were more surreal than Renaissance. haha

So that's what we've been up to so far this holiday season. We're looking forward to celebrating with friends and family soon!
